Meet our newest client, Usheka

She’s moving forward by saying “I can” instead of “I can’t”

We’re excited to introduce you to our newest client, Usheka, and tell you how she became the proud owner of a black 2012 Nissan Altima!

Usheka was connected to OnRamp DFW through The Heights Ellis County Family Services, a nonprofit organization that helps women and children who are survivors of domestic violence by employing the family justice center model. When our team interviewed her, they were struck by Usheka’s courage, hope, and determination. She was open about those challenges that were of her own making and that she is still a work in progress, working toward goals she hasn’t fully realized yet.

Her Advocate at The Heights said Usheka “fiercely seeks out resources” to improve life for her two boys and that she is “strong willed at setting goals and reaching them.” We saw evidence of these in her accomplishment of an Associate’s degree while working two jobs and being a full-time single mom! When we met with her on the morning of the giveaway, Usheka spoke about the challenges she’s faced, the setbacks that have tried to derail her, and even the times when she had to go without food so her kids could be fed. She said in those times she is tempted to give in to the voice that says: “I can’t, I can’t, I can’t” but instead chooses to say “I can, I can, I can!”

As is often the case, Usheka had a vehicle that was making it possible for her to get all the places she had to go, but it often broke down, eventually beyond repair. Usheka had the presence of mind to rent a vehicle, knowing that a vehicle was crucial for her to continue to take steps forward, however at great cost to her already taxed resources. Buying an affordable used car from a trustworthy seller in DFW is a challenge for anyone; for someone in Usheka’s position, it was almost impossible. We are so grateful to our generous donors who have made it possible for us to help Usheka with a vehicle that will keep her moving forward! (pun intended). We are also so thankful that God has been with her along this path as her Good Shepherd, and that he has promised to never leave her or forsake her.

If it feels like there’s been a lull in giving cars away, you’re not alone - it feels that way to us too! 😊 Sometimes the process our clients go through goes quickly, and sometimes it takes a while to get a step checked off. We have several more clients who are almost to the finish line, and we’re excited to have more stories to share soon!
