Update: Kelvin got a car!
It was a beautiful morning at the Dallas County Tax Office - I’m pretty sure those words have never been said before! Thanks to Tim Bernett (pictured in the passenger seat), all of Kelvin’s paperwork was ready to go, but because of some language challenges, we could tell Kelvin wasn’t completely sure if he was going to be driving away in a car or if this was just another step along the way. Understandably, the OnRamp DFW process, from initial Advocate application to receiving a vehicle has many steps, and for someone who is walking to work every day, it can feel long and drawn out. So when all the paperwork was signed and we were walking out to the parking lot, Kelvin wasn’t totally sure what was coming next.
But what was coming next was Kelvin’s introduction to a beautiful 2007 cherry red Toyota Corolla! In the weeks prior, Tim had lovingly detailed the Corolla (our favorite vehicle type, by the way) from top to bottom, and Christian Brothers North Dallas had performed a maintenance inspection on the Corolla and provided generously discounted maintenance for us. The photo above was captured not long after we introduced Kelvin to his Corolla.
After we had shown Kelvin the maintenance checklist and tools we stocked the vehicle with, taken lots of pictures, and handed him the keys, we had one more gift to give. Jon Lilley, our Chaplain and Prayer Team leader had ordered a Bible in Kelvin’s native language of Dari. Though our gift of a vehicle has no connection to our clients’ faith and beliefs, our love for Kelvin is completely connected to the love God has shown us in Christ. Our gift would not be complete if we were to leave that part out, which for us is the most important part.
We would like to say a huge “thank you” to the following: all of our volunteers who were involved in this process; Kelvin’s Advocate, Bahereh at Mosaic Family Services; Jason Shiba and Christian Brothers North Dallas; and everyone who contributed financially to our being able to purchase a vehicle for Kelvin.
We have many more clients like Kelvin waiting patiently in line for us to gather the resources to help them with vehicles! If you aren’t a regular monthly contributor, would you consider adding OnRamp DFW to your list of monthly donations so we can continue to help people with reliable transportation in the name of Jesus?
Let’s keep doing this!
