Rolling into the new year with Homayoun and Samira

Our first clients of 2024 came to us through a repeat Advocate, Jamie at Nexus Neighborhood Outreach. Homayoun and Samira are from Afghanistan, and were forced to flee with their three children when the Taliban took over their country in 2021. As I can only imagine, making an emergency new home in a new culture brings incredible challenges with it, but Homayoun and Samira also have a child who has spina bifida, a spinal condition that requires him to use a wheelchair.

How providential we just had a family donate their 2012 Nissan Quest minivan that we could offer this family!

Tim and CBA had this 2012 Nissan Quest in tip-top shape!

Jamie shared with our group how impressed he has been with this family as he’s gotten to know them. Homayoun routinely works 70 hours/week between two jobs in order to provide for his family. At the same time, he and Samira have been working on their English, practicing their driving skills, and learning to navigate the American medical system. His dream is to one day become a mechanic and open his own shop where he can offer low-cost maintenance for people in similar situations, but for now he is just trying to make ends meet. Though Homayoun’s boss had loaned them a small sedan, they knew they needed a minivan and had started saving toward this goal - a goal that was going to take 2-3 years to achieve.

At the giveaway, we shared the reason we give cars to people, that the love of Jesus compels us to love others around us. We spent a few minutes thanking God and praying for His blessing for this family.

Homayoun and Samira requested a moment to share their hearts with the group who was gathered to celebrate with them. We all leaned in to hear his quiet voice as he told us of their coming to the USA, of their gratefulness and desire to host our group in their home soon. And then Samira pulled out a hidden pizza she had made that morning to share with the group, and it was still warm!

Once again, we were blessed and inspired by the courage and resilience of one of our client families and thankful to God for his provision for them. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day happen, especially the family who was willing to donate their minivan once they were finished with it.
