Meet Mikey: Resettled Interpreter for US Special Forces

It’s not everyday that we get to gift a vehicle to a hero. Our next client was an interpreter for US Special Forces in Afghanistan for 9 years! During that time he saved US Special Forces lives….twice! In a recommendation for the client, a lieutenant colonel from the US military stated: “Mikey continually supported the US throughout his time in Afghanistan. He was present during numerous use-of-force-required events and never once backed down from his word to work and fight alongside Americans. I have no doubt that Americans are alive because of the work Mikey performed”

Mikey and his family were left behind in Afghanistan when the US evacuated from the country. His family tried to escape through the airport in scenes similar to the ones that filled our newsfeeds and tv screens. During his attempts to leave, his wife and 6-year old son were wounded by gunfire. He and his family, still dealing with their gunshot wounds, were finally able to get out a few days later.

Now this hero who put his life on the line for our troops is riding his bike 25 minutes each way to work and his pregnant wife is walking 20 minutes each way to drop kids off at school - even on 100+ degree days.

During our interview, Mikey said: “My wife told me you have done all this for this country (United States); you have suffered so much, and now who is asking what you need? I told her, ‘Just you wait. The day will come.’ And this is that day.”

We would love for you to join us in caring for Mikey and his family as they adjust to life in the United States and work to become self-sufficient. You can contribute toward his vehicle and year of maintenance here.
